For the Love of God, Can Someone Put a Stop to This?

Just in time for their new tour this year: Charlie Watts looks like an embalmed JRR Tolkien, Mick is okay actually, Ron Wood strongly resembles my fourth grade teacher Mrs. Schneider, and Keith Richards is about to dry up and blow away.

So I guess that the answer to my question is, "No, they don't have enough money yet."

In defense of Charlie Watts, the poor ol' chap is recovering from throat cancer treatment I believe...thus the formaldahyde look.

This kind of tour'd be fine with me if they had the new material to back it up, but it's common knoweldge to anyone who has an once of honesty in 'em that Mick & the boys haven't put out the kind of stuff worth promoting live in the last...oh I dunno, at least 20+ years.

My guess is they'll keep doing this until they reach the Lynyrd Skynyrd point, and by that I mean the point where there's only one or two original members surrounded by guys half their age on stage, what I like to call the "cover band" stage...

If thirty somethings can still talk about music the way we did twenty years ago, why can't sixty somethings capitalize on their musical legacies? Also, I really hope that when I'm 63 I look as good as the Glimmer Twins. I hope we all do for that matter. BTW, I just heard a sampling of the Stone's new album (A Bigger Bang) on iTunes. The album is due for release in September and while the music isn't stupendous, its got merit.

More of a joke, really, bels, probably a bad one. If the Stones can get people to pay $125 and more to come to their concerts, then they should absolutely go out and rake up as much dough as they can. After all, they aren't polluting the environment or being predatory lenders or anything like that.

And I will cop to having a hang-up about seeing rock stars age. I guess it's the older visages coupled with the with-it clothes that is jarring for me. But that's my problem, not theirs.

Well, for what it's worth (close to nothing) I personally *do* take issue with artists not really trying, playing strickly jukebox onstage with 30 or 40 year-old songs while making an absolutely *obsene* amount of money touring these huge, impersonal stadiums with poor sound systems, etc. I understand that there is a nostalgia market for this, and that people don't have to go see them, yada-yada-yada, but I'm frankly very disappointed that they, as artists, enjoy or get enough fulfillment out of this to keep doing these ridiculous mega-tours supporting these mediocre albums! Like I said, if the Stones made an effort to write exciting music again, or at least if they made an effort to price the tickets reasonably and tour smaller and warmer venues, then , in turn, I probably would make an effort to go see them, because I do love their better work. I did see them in '89 and again in '90, I think. And I did get a glimpse of why the kids in the 70's who would soon become the punk movement felt so angry about when they complained about the Dinosaurs. $125 a pop to see them play the Monsterdome somewhere in NJ (brought to you by Budweiser)? I don't think so! For that same amount of money, I'd rather see 10 shows with new, exciting artists....and I do!

Tell it, Commissar kgo! Though, I wonder: Once you have eradicated the phone-it-in Enormodome tours by aging rock stars (something I personally could really get behind), who is next "up against the wall," culturally speaking? I kid because I love.

Well...for starters, how about hitting the reset button on this ridiculous notion in the pop music industry that it's OK to not sing live at your own shows anymore! I'm just spitballin' here!...

As much as I love and appreciate your comments on Cheeze Blog, I must say that it is time for you, my friend, to get a blog.

Watch it! Some of us just became eligible for AARP and are fast getting worried about how recent a photo will accompany our own obit. One less frightful than Mick's, I hope. Anyway, I now understand why some obits have such old pics.

Thanks for the comment, ol' prof!

Yep, looking back on it now there might be a little "projection" on my part (staring down 40 in a few years) in that post on the Stones. And I didn't realize at the time that Charlie Watts is coming off of throat cancer. (Just like a Democrat to furiously walk back from a bold statement.)
