The 2005 Loan Sharks picked a good time to turn in their best game of the season, handing Ron's Auto a convincing 23-7 defeat in the first of two sudden-death playoff games. Next, the Sharks go on to face the Woodpeckers on Tuesday August 2 at Shattuck.
The Sharks benefited from production up and down the order. An early highlight was Ellie Zapata's base-clearing three-run double down the left field line in the second. In the 8-run third, Karen Hinchen launched an rbi-double over the left-fielder's head, always a crowd-pleaser. Matt Henzy followed up later that inning with a three-run, two-out triple.
The Sharks tacked on 8 more runs in the fourth, keyed by patient Shark hitters working three walks and a couple of dropped balls in the Ron's Auto outfield.
In the bottom of the fourth, Don Bianchi turned in a Willie Mays - worthy over the shoulder catch in left to rob the Ron's cleanup hitter of a sure homer. That defensive play typified Shark fielding, which went error-free for the second straight outing. Sharks pitcher Alan Fein walked zero and kept Ron's heavy hitters off balance with a high-arcing but irresistable eephus that usually resulted in a harmless pop-up.
